Est. 2018

SESSION is an Arts & Activism Collective, donation-based Tea & Arts House (Café, Theater, Studio, Stage, Pop-Ups) by RSVP, Podcast, and Media Network. Our goal is to provide people with free platforms and support to make money from their passions, and to create community-based businesses, networks, and projects in the process.

Why do we do this? We believe everyone deserves to live a life that affirms and sustains them without compromise. How do we do this? We donate our services, events, venues, and products to people for free, and suggest a monetary or in-kind donation in return. People have generously donated to us for our free services. We call this the “donation economy,” and it’s working.

SESSION started as a creative pop-up event in February of 2018, and continued as an event series over the next 6 months with performances, galleries, installations, screenings, listenings, and pop-ups. After a period of brainstorming and planning, SESSION relaunched in February of 2019 with the SESSION Tea & Arts House in Long Beach, CA, alongside the SESSION Live Podcast.

If SESSION sounds like something that could be useful to you, sign our Guest Book. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter for invites to local & on-line events. If you’ve visited the SESSION Tea & Arts house, leave us a review on Yelp. Want to get involved further with SESSION? Contact us.

Jonathan Henderson, M.A. / Scholarship & Activism

JonathanHenderson

BOOK JONATHAN

Jonathan Henderson, M.A. is a researcher, program manager, lecturer, facilitator, and scholar- activist that believes in the power of critical agency development. Currently based in Los Angeles, California, Jonathan has worked since 2011 in support of underserved communities, and since 2014 has worked in supervisory capacities where he has designed, coordinated, and assessed programs focused on retention and student success at the K – college levels.

One great example of this was during his service as Site Coordinator for Read Lead, a summer initiative dedicated to promoting literacy and leadership opportunities for youth and young adults in underserved communities. During that six-week period Jonathan designed and coordinated 5 parent workshops, 10 student success workshops, 5 field-trip events and 1 culmination ceremony all while supervising the instruction of 50 middle school and high school aged students. The students achieved some of the highest literacy scores in the nation as a result of their participation that summer (based on pre-and post-literacy assessments).

Currently, Jonathan serves as the founding Project Coordinator for The Rose Black Resource Center, a brand new affinity center based at California State University Dominguez Hills that works to foster retention, graduation and success among Black students. While serving in this position, Jonathan designed and implemented an IRB sanctioned, university-wide mixed methods study that identified and assessed the needs of Black undergraduate students at California State University Dominguez Hills.

This allowed for him to provide the foundation for the centers mission, vision, outcomes and organizational structure. For his excellent service, Jonathan was featured on the CSU Chancellor’s website. Jonathan was also featured in a documentary entitled If These Halls Could Talk facilitated by Lee Mun Wah, the world-renowned and critically acclaimed diversity facilitator and director of the documentary The Color of Fear.
